Historical Preservation

HISTORICAL PRESERVATION projects maintain the original character of a historic facility, while at the same time creating a work environment that better meets the clients’ business needs.

The scope of a historical preservation project can take many forms: from a repair to exterior masonry; to a renovation to introduce modern amenities (e.g., replacing stairs with elevators); to construction of an addition, in which the new façade must complement the existing historic façade. Often, the work includes the upgrading of mechanical and electrical systems, or the introduction of complex communications and security systems, to meet modern day business needs.

PCL had to restore to original condition two historically-significant facades from the old Postal Authority Building. The south and east walls of the old building had to be structurally retained while the remainder of the old Postal Building was demolished. These two historical facades then became the permanent eastern and southern walls of the new facility.

Complete interior demolition and renovation of this historic seven-story structure. The East Memorial Building, completed in 1955, was intended along with the West Memorial building to be a monument to those killed in the Second World War. Because of its significant historical assocations, its fine architectural design and its urban contextual significance, the East Memorial has been designated "Classifed" by the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office (FHBRO). Because the building is historically designated, designs required the approval of the Federal Heritage Building Review Committee.   The work includes repointing and stone repairs to all the exterior masonry. Over and above the structural and architectural modifications, the mechanical and electrical systems were completely replaced in the East Memorial Building as well as data and communication upgrades.

The original two-story structure is incorporated into the design and layout of the new four-story hotel building, which replicates the historical architecture and emphasizes historic Savannah. A heavily landscaped 136-space surface parking lot, surrounded by a brick and picket fence of historic character, was constructed on the adjoining parcel to service the hotel and restaurant.
