1.0 MG Water Storage Tank

Location:

Snowmass Village, CO

Built By:

CFC/PCL
Project Description
Fast track construction of a new 1.0MG buried concrete water storage clearwell for the town of Snowmass Village, primarily for additional fire suppression capabilities in the growing town. Construction season was very short due to the location of the project; elevation 9000' on an existing Snowmass ski run. Project window to construct the tank and approximately ½ mile of 8” and 12” ductile iron transmission lines was from May 1 to Oct 15 of 2009, due to the extreme alpine environment. Excavation for the clearwell was approximately 36,000 bcy, or which 30,000bcy was used to backfill the tank entirely, buying it up to 15' below the ski run. 6,000 bcy of excess was hauled off to other projects on the mountain. The excavation was up to 42' deep on the uphill side of the hole. Material was stockpiled uphill from the excavation on the ski run, with great care taken to not encroach on National Forest property and extreme consideration for the environmental sensitivity of the area. The structure is a round, cast in place, post-tensioned concrete tank, approximately 30' tall and 90' diameter. Walls were formed using Symons hand set forms, and the concrete was placed in alternating ¼ sections. The roof slab, cast in place and post tensioned as well was constructed using 10kip/leg Hi Load shoring towers, and was placed in one pour. Vertical and horizontal post tensioning was used in the walls and the floor and roof slabs were also post tensioned in 2 directions. Ancillary work included installation of 8” and 12” diameter ductile iron piping to tie in the new tank to the existing TOSV potable water system. Much of this work was performed in a live 2 lane roadway, under traffic, at depths up to 12' below the road's surface.
