Greenstone Building

The new four-storey, 7,200 m2 Greenstone Building (also known as Government of Canada Building) is model for sustainable development "North of 60".  Designed as a LEED® project, this home for 200 public servants takes maximum advantage of daylight during both the short winter days and the long summer days.  Greenstone is home for the second largest commercial building photovoltaic system in the world.  A south-facing atrium creates a winter room that provides an important amenity to this winter city, while enhancing the thermal performance of the building.  Facing Franklin Avenue, the Greenstone has a strong civic presence, creating a clear and transparent public entry on the main street of the City of Yellowknife. 

The interior of the Greenstone was designed to subtly reflect the mining heritage of Yellowknife.  For instance, the front entrance and stairs, with their slanted wood surface, mirror the construction of mining shafts.

Built .5km of the West Bay Fault, an architectural representation of the fault line is etched on the floor of the lobby of the building.
