Project Description
The Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Strategic Redevelopment Project encompasses five building projects under a single contract. - The Athletics Complex includes the abatement and demolition of the existing structure followed by the construction of a 30,000 sq. ft. 3-story, multi-use, athletics support building including gym, laundry, general offices, and locker rooms.Structural work includes cast-in-place foundation retaining walls, precast tees and planks with topping slabs, suspended slabs, and CMU. The building exterior includes DFS finish and standing seam metal roofing. The project site is located directly beside an Olympic-sized pool in full operation throughout the construction.
- The Middle School includes the abatement and demolition of nine existing structures, followed by the construction of a new middle school and administration building encompassing 113,000 sq. ft.. Structures include a 3-storyl, open-learning, classroom building, a 2-story administration/cafeteria/band building, and a single-story chiller plant. Structural work involves continuous and spread concrete footings, slab-on-grade, precast planks with concrete topping, suspended slabs, cast-in-place concrete walls, and CMU walls. The building exterior includes DFS finish and paint at exterior CMU walls, standing seam metal roofing, and aluminum storefronts and windows.
- The Kaiwakiloumoku Hawaiian Cultural Center is the construction of a 20,000 sq. ft., 2-story facility on a 1.63 acre site to be used for education and ceremonies to perpetuate and preserve the Hawaiian culture. The programmed spaces include classrooms, a commercial kitchen, mechanical and electrical rooms, covered parking, large assembly hall, and a 15,000 sq. ft. artificial turf field for ceremonies and outdoor activities. This project requires the heavy rock excavation of a "blue-rock" hill face to accommodate the new construction. The structure is a blend of cast-in-place concrete walls, CMU, and precast planks with topping.
- The Parking Garage structure is a 5-story facility designed to ease the current parking challenges of the campus. The design is a full precast structure with wear slabs and traffic coating throughout.
This new facility is being built on an extremely tight site with many logistical challenges with school bus traffic and student thoroughfare. The project includes a pedestrian bridge across the busy main campus road. - Middle School Dormitories and Fitness Center involves the abtement and demolition of four existing structures, followed by the phased construction of two new dorms and a fitness center encompassing 18,000 sq. ft.. Structures include two 3-story dormitory buildings with dorm living area and common kitchens, as well as, a single story fitness center and playcourt.
Structural work involves continuous footings, suspended slabs, and cast-in-place concrete and CMU walls. The building exterior includes a DFS finish and paint at exterior CMU walls, standing seam metal roofing, aluminum storefronts and windows. Site work includes new utilities to buildings, structural excavation, concrete curbs, ramps and sidewalks, site retaining walls, and landscape and irrigation. Design-assist services were provided prior to construction.
