Project Features/Highlights
The main atrium features the Centre for Dialogue, which is a raised circular classroom, enclosed with locally sourced wood cladding to resemble a First Nations basket with a culturally relevant gathering space below. Prior to mobilization the project team was invited to partake in a smudging ceremony led by elders of the Westbank First Nation. Project Description
The Okanagan College Centre for Learning is a new structure in the centre of the campus consisting of a new 5 storey class and office building of approximately 5494 m². This building connects to the existing library with a new circulation agora of 1,251 m2. The new building is comprised of a slab on grade, concrete columns, concrete stair cores and 4 flat plate suspended slabs. The roof structure is fabricated with structural steel. The interior consists of offices, meeting rooms and open classroom areas with a stair core at either end of the building. The exterior finish is comprised of composite aluminum wall panels and curtain wall. The agora and circulation area consists of a structural steel and glulam structure with exterior curtain wall. This area spans the front of the existing library and encloses the new addition. The circulation area will include a centre for dialogue which will provide a central gathering space and distinctive architectural feature. The project plan is to achieve LEED Gold.
